It’s the most wonderful time of the year, right? I think so. But it’s also the time when despite all our best intentions self care can go right out the window if we aren’t conscious. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE the baking and shopping, partying and fellowshipping, there really is so much joy to be found during the holiday season. However, what better time than now to also be just as thoughtful towards yourself as you are towards your loved ones? If you are anything like me, you may take the approach “I’ll rest after the holidays”, but what if I told you that you can still have your fun, and your restoration too???

Check out the tips below for fun and easy ways to infuse some restorative self care into your holiday season no matter how much time you have.

5 Minutes Or Less:

Who says you can’t find balance and a reboot in under 5 minutes? Here are my 2 favorite methods

  1. Pump up the jams (or mellow your mood). The thing that I love about music is that it can set the tone for whatever you are looking for. I definitely have my days at work where it’s a Lil Wayne kinda day, other days Lil Wayne might get me in trouble so I call in the aid of Corinne Bailey Rae. It’s the same for creating a moment of restoration. Five minutes can shift an entire mood and leave you feeling energized or restored.

  2. Meditate. People often think in order for meditation to work that you have to devote significant amounts of time, but studies show that as little as 2 minutes, done routinely can have powerful benefits.

10-20 minutes

Here are a few ways to make the most of just 10-20 minutes.

  1. Get Creative. Journaling, doodling or adult coloring books can be an awesome way to take a moment, disconnect from the outer world, and reconnect with your inner self. You could enjoy a cup of tea or coffee while you are at it to really take it to another level.

  2. Catch some Zzzzs. Can someone say POWER NAP?!? While my preferred power nap is about 20 minutes, I’ve been known to snooze for as little as 10, and it really can make a difference. Sleeping for more than 30 often leaves me groggy, but this article provides great info on the 20 minute nap, as well as longer options. What can I say, when the batteries are drained, every little bit helps.

30 minutes:

  1. Get moving. Honestly, living in the Midwest makes it hard to go for a relaxing (or energizing) stroll during this time of year. HOWEVER if Ohio maintains its reputation of whirlwind weather swings, it really could be possible. Even still, a nice alternative to an outdoor stroll is to stream a video of your favorite workout and give yourself 30 minutes of escape while supporting your fitness goals. If you are enjoying warmer climates - definitely squeeze that walk in outdoors. Connecting with nature has been proven to support health and wellness in incredible ways.

  2. Relax in a warm bath, light some candles and enjoy a magazine (and maybe some more music)!!

Regardless of how much time you have, or what activity you choose, commit to being present. Let your to-do list go for the time being. No need to worry about tasks ahead or anything that has already passed. Try and ground yourself in an intention during that time and enjoy every moment.
