Creating Space…For Resilience

“You see you wouldn’t ask why the rose that grew from concrete had damaged petals. On the contrary, we would celebrate its tenacity.” ~Tupac Shakur

Preface: Ironically, most of this post was written earlier in the week, BEFORE the grand jury decided not to hold ANY of the officers accountable for their actions that led to the death of Breonna Taylor. But we remain committed to demanding justice and requiring equality. We remain resilient. I truly intend for this post to speak to your heart, to speak to your struggle NO MATTER the fight you are facing, be it something very specific to your experience, or something that impacts us all globally. But how can I even face my own internal battles without acknowledging the larger fight that affects us all? No matter what one chooses to believe regarding the injustice in society, it does, without a doubt, affect us all. #blacklivesmatter

Resilience. The Fight.

Sometimes life can feel like you’re in a major fight, and in some cases you win a round and in some cases you get knocked the hell down. But as long as you get back up, the battle is not over. But you have to keep swinging. And this my friends is what we call resilience.

Resilience is defined as : the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness.

I know I’m not the only one who has (or has had) those moments. You sit there stunned trying to figure out why life has just punched you in the face. And at that point you have two choices. Pout or Fight. Resilience says fight. So below are three of my core beliefs that I feel contribute to resilience.

  1. Nothing lasts forever. No matter how upsetting a circumstance feels it can’t last forever. This is why we fight, because somewhere within we believe, we hope, there is something better on the other side of the struggle. This Hope is the fuel that allows us to press on.

  2. You aren’t perfect, and neither is life so expect to fall down sometimes. Just get back up. Sometimes our battle is as localized as the battle within our own head. The stories we tell ourselves, and the expectations that we have set. And while this is incredible fuel for achieving your goals and dreams, it will undoubtedly come with setbacks. Keep pushing, but give yourself some grace.

  3. You don’t have to have it all figured out. You may not know HOW you will overcome. You just need to know that you WILL overcome. And with that, you will find the WILL to carry on. Make the best decisions you can at that time. If you made the right choice great. But if not, keep going. That’s life and it’s time to make a new one.

I also decided to do some reading in this topic, and I really liked this article on resilience as well. Check it out, and let me know what you think.

What are some of your strategies around building resilience? What inspires you to press forward when life knocks you down?

I’m sending you love, light, hope, and persistent strength.

Namaste,
