Creating Space…To Be Fearless pt. 4
/Welcome to the final segment of Be Fearless! As always you can click through part 1, part 2, or part 3 if you haven’t explored those yet. In this segment, we’ll get into three ways you can ultimately conquer your fear.
Ground Yourself in Purpose
Just as we discussed knowing your why in “Creating Space…For a Healthy Lifestyle”, the same holds true here. Having a strong why helps us anchor deeper into our own resolve. If you want to start a business, pursue the next level of your career, go back to school, or any other dream, being able to take a step back and revisit the driving force behind that desire is critical. The mission statement for LSF Yoga is “Nourishing the spirit of the community through positive interaction, breath and movement.” I know in my heart of hearts that God put me on this Earth to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. My life has been transformed through my yoga journey and I believe that teaching allows me to connect with people and be a pathway to their own exploration of yoga. So, when I contemplated driving out to Fairfield and pitching “Soul Flow” to Nina, I was able to call on the strength of purpose to settle my nerves and take the next step forward.
Take Small Steps
I think it’s fair to say that most people who are about to step into a new experience don’t have it all figured out. You know what you want to do, but you may not know how. As you start to do research and connect with others the steps may become more clear, but it can still be pretty intimidating. I really like how Neil Pasricha explains it in The Happiness Equation. It’s the doing that builds the confidence that helps you take the next step and the next step. If you want to start working out, simply start, even if you start small. Take a walk down the street, do a few sets of pushups, whatever it may be, just to get the process started. Once you see that you can, the small steps become bigger steps and help move you closer toward the bigger goal. If you want to become a chef, sign up for some simple cooking classes, don’t overthink it, just take the first step. If you want to start a blog, make a list of all the things you want to talk about. Then write about the first thing.
Fail. And Be Okay
So often we put things that are important to us off because we can’t fathom the idea of it not working out. But the reality is, the most successful folks out there fail many times before they succeed, and oftentimes, in the midst of success they still face many defeats. In order to learn what works, sometimes you have to have a few lessons in what doesn’t work. Thousands and thousands of new products are launched every year, and most of them fail. According to Harvard Business School Professor Clayton Christensen, that rate is about 95%. Sure, he provides some strategies to help drive more success, but failure is inevitable, and that’s how you learn. Small steps build confidence. So does surviving failure. Failure isn’t fatal, it’s a part of life. We’ve all experienced it in some form or another. I don’t know that I’ve ever taught a perfect yoga class. But I know my yogis really appreciate the thoughtfulness and effort I bring to our space, and I know I’ve gotten it right far more than I’ve gotten it wrong. So what fear will you conquer today? What’s your why, what small steps can you take, and what will you learn along the way? As always, wishing you all the best in your journey.
Namaste…
