Mindfulness. We’ve all heard of it, and we have a clear definition. But what does it look like, and how can we create more space for it?

While it may seem lofty, or something only seasoned yogis and meditation aficionados can do, the truth is, Mindfulness is for everyone, and anyone can do it.

Why mindfulness? Mindfulness allows us to bring ourselves into the present. Being in the present creates space for inner peace and mental balance. Often times stress, anxiety and depression are caused by either reflecting on difficult times from the past, or worrying about future outcomes. In the present, we find peace. When we bring our awareness into the present, mindfully we strive to observe our thoughts and state of mind without judgement. We become curious and empowered to explore the source of our thoughts and feelings.

So how do I do this mindfulness thing?

Try a few of these activities to invite mindfulness into your daily routine. Try to limit distractions, and keep your mind focused on the activity at hand. No multitasking.

1) Start your morning with a moment of reflection. Take a moment to set an intention and the tone you want to create for your day.

2) Journal your thoughts. Try focusing on things you are grateful for. Practicing gratitude consistently has been shown to provide a boost in positivity.

3) Take a mindful walk. Engage as many senses as you can. Notice how the feet feel hitting the pavement, the air feels on your skin, any scents in the air, and sites & sounds in your environment.

4) Try to consume at least one meal per day mindfully, and without external distractions. Take a moment and visually observe your meal - notice the colors, shapes, textures. Inhale the scents, savor the flavors. Not only will your digestive system thank you, numerous studies have shown mindful eating can lead to weight loss. 5) Tune in. Find a time- after work, before bed, or maybe during a commute to listen to your favorite song or artist. Try to keep your attention focused on the music. Train your brain by giving yourself a challenge. Anytime you find that your mind has drifted away from the present moment, restart the song and try again to tune in. Over time, you will notice that you can more easily stay connected to the present.

Mindfulness really is for everyone, and anyone can do it. Give it a try, and notice how your perspective changes. What are some of your favorite mindfulness techniques?

Namaste,
